The Embrace of Branch and Feather

The Embrace of Branch Feather

Created on Walnut

Dimensions: 90cm x 40cm

In this detailed pyrography artwork, two silver birch trees rise and intertwine, their pale trunks marked with the subtle scars of weather and time. The bark, finely etched with delicate lines, carries both strength and fragility, a reminder that endurance often hides in quiet forms. Around them, sparrows move through the branches, their muted feathers blending into the woodland tones. They are not birds that seek attention, yet their presence fills the scene with life, movement, and purpose.

The sparrow has long been a companion to our towns and fields, loyal, industrious, and unpretentious. Unlike so many others, it does not flee to warmer skies but faces each season head-on, together with its flock. Its beauty lies not in bright plumage, but in the way it thrives through unity, persistence, and quiet cooperation.

In a small hollow within one of the trees, a fledgling rests, almost hidden but deeply symbolic. It speaks of the small acts of care and endurance that carry life forward, unnoticed by most, yet vital to all.

The silver birches stand as guardians, their intertwined branches offering shelter and strength. Around them, the sparrows embody resilience and community, a reminder that not all strength shouts. Some simply endures, together, through every changing season.

The reverse of this artwork is particularly detailed. Not only have I incorporated the story of the sparrows, but I have also woven a host of sparrows into the text itself. In fact, it is nearly as intricate as the front, adding depth, narrative, and texture to the piece. This work has been created on walnut.
