Drawing with Fire, Pyrography:
An Artist’s Statement

I am a passionate pyrographer, drawn to the magic of transforming wood with fire. Each mark I make tells a story, each grain becomes a whisper of time, and through my work I aim to capture the essence of nature, wildlife, and the hidden stories they hold. My pieces range from naturalistic portraits of animals and landscapes to experimental works exploring colour, movement, and emotion. I want to elevate pyrography beyond its traditional associations with craft and present it as a contemporary art form, one that engages with ecology, and the cultural histories of fire, mark-making, and wood.

I spend hours observing my subjects, studying their forms, movements, and expressions, before translating them into intricate burns on carefully selected woods such as walnut and sycamore. Each artwork carries my signature, the date, and a narrative on the reverse, offering viewers an intimate glimpse into the inspiration and process behind the work.

Through my workshops, “Learn to Burn,” and public commissions, I share the meditative and transformative joy of pyrography, inviting others to experience the subtle, immersive beauty of the medium. My work celebrates resilience, harmony, and the quiet power of nature, offering a legacy I hope will endure for generations. There is nothing quite like the experience of drawing with fire: the quiet intensity, the control, and the creativity.

People often ask what inspires me. I draw deeply from observation and experience, studying animals in the wild, exploring landscapes, and connecting with the rhythms and textures of the natural world. I push the boundaries of the medium, experimenting with light, shadow, and colour, always striving to reveal more than just the image, to capture presence, energy, and story.

In every piece, I aim to reframe pyrography as a serious contemporary art form, one that challenges perceptions, engages the viewer, and celebrates the tactile, transformative beauty of wood and fire.
